New year, new group

The great thing about our groups is that each one is different. Paul – one of the co-founders – and I shared some of the ‘rules’ that our groups use, from how they choose books and venues – democratically or by diktat…; types and length of books; the out of ten scoring to give an average that my group uses and so on; the meeting over dinner or drinks or in someone’s home; etc.

The latest (North) London Reading Group put forward seven titles and voted to choose one. They were:

  • The Buried Giant, Kazuo Ishiguro (winner with five votes)
  • One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez
  • The Green Road, Annie Enright
  • Offshore, Penelope Fitzgerald
  • The Road, Cormac McCarthy
  • A Brief History of Seven Killings, Marlon Jones (Booker Prize winner 2015)
  • Trigger Warning, Neil Gaiman
  • To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf
  • The Trigger, Tim Butcher

We met in the Star of Kings so that anyone who wanted to could stay and take part in the quiz after – which we won – and therefore start our new group off with a £50 bar tab for that pub if they choose to meet there in the next couple of months. Not bad.

Looking forward to hearing from our new group and seeing them at larger events.

  1. Hi, will the next meetup for this group be emailed out? I wasn’t able to make the first group.
